A great machine at a great price

I have been sewing since 1966. My machine is a Kenmore free arm purchased in 1976. I saw this Singer machine advertised at Tuesday Morning for just under $200; shop around for a great price before you buy. I did lots of reading reviews before I decided to invest in this. I did not want to choose something that was not quality or had lots of performance issues. This is the Singer Athena 2009, formerly named Singer Curvy.I bought it online from Tuesday Morning, it shipped to my home and was well packaged. The machine was boxed in the Singer marketing box you would find on the store shelf, and then it was placed in a much bigger shipping box with bubble wrap and packing paper around it. UPS Ground delivered it in excellent shape. At this price, I thought it was time to put my Kenmore on the shelf as a backup machine only.I unpacked, read the manual, set up the machine, watched the DVD about the machine and the other one about all the accessories and how they are used. I loaded thread on the bobbin, threaded the needle (it has an automatic threader, useful for our older eyes!), and ran some practice stitches. I am in heaven. I don't need a several thousand dollar machine; this will do everything I need. I was interested in the fancy stitching, like the feather, buttonhole, satin, and it has cut and serge (nice for sweatshirt type fabrics), and the hand quilting look stitches. It has plenty of additional decorative stitches to make me a happy camper. The clear bobbin lid allows you to see how much thread is left. It has an additional oversized extension table. The table on the machine can be removed to allow free arm sewing for small projects and it stores the loose feet and bobbins. It comes with lots of different feet, like ruffling, cording, etc. The foot pedal is comfortable to use, and it has a built in carrying handle. It sews beautifully and is somewhat quieter and smoother than my Kenmore. I am completely satisfied that my money was well spent and I will have this for many years.

My husband purchased this for me as a gift. I was originally planning to purchase the singer 160 from HSN. Unfortunately when I logged on with hubbies debit card info the 160 was sold out. The Athena had more stitches, all the same features ( swiftsmart threading, drop n sew bobbin, etc.) at a slightly lower price, so I opted for this machine instead. I am not sorry at all. I use it quite often, I've sewn several dresses for my baby girl, sewn a quilt top for my lil boy, lots of various mending and even made some dresses to sell for my business. This machine has done it all with not one problem. I'm fairly new to sewing, only started this year and was working on my mothers Singer 6212c that she purchased when I was born in 1984. That was a great workhorse, but going from a mechanical machine to this beautiful electronic...wow!The Athena is quiet, doesn't bounce around, and sews so smooth. My 5 yr old son was able to thread it on his own and sew..he was so proud. I love the automatic needle threader. It has worked every single time for me. I also love the Swiftsmart threading system and the drop n sew bobbin. It makes getting to the actual sewing part so much quicker and more convenient. I can't rave enough about my Athena.I also love the reverse button. I don't have to hold down the foot pedal. Went you want to secure a stitch you just push the button. It sews in reverse for straight and zig zag stitches and creates 4 tacking stitches for decorative stitches. I personally would recommend this machine, but I haven't experienced some of the problems some other people have had. I did make sure to use my Athena quite a bit before writing a review.

Donte waste your time

I went through two of these machines before finally giving up on Singer. The internal parts are all plastic and the machines are now cheaply made in China. I did very light sewing and broke the first machine in one weekend. I exchanged it for another because I'd read favorable reviews and while trying to sew a buttonhole the thread jammed around the bobbin and the mechanism around the bobbin literally jumped out of the machine. I'm done with Singers and have moved on to a Viking which has all metal parts. I didn't sew denim or anything thick. I didn't do any heavy duty sewing, only light cotton. I'm very disappointed in Singer for going downhill like this. Don't waste your time on a Singer sewing machine.
