5A good machine that is worth the money!
By Maree2012
I purchased this sewing machine in February of 2012. I have been using it for over a year now. It sews like a dream and is so easy to use. In a years time I just broke my first needle last month. I keep the tension dial set at 4 which is where it is when the machine arrives at your door. It sews lightweight materials to heavy jean material without changing the tension. My daughter loves the automatic thread cutter. I am a quilter and use my blind hem foot to measure a scant quarter inch seam. I even quilt the quilts I make on this machine. I just roll the excess quilt in a tube and stick it in the machine unrolling as I go. I do an entire quilt from start to finish on this one machine. I am trying to learn to free motion quilt and this machine comes with a darning foot, so I can attempt this. All in all this is a good machine worth the money. I received 20 pressure feet and have yet to try them all. Just from what I have used I am happy with my purchase. If you are on the fence about whether or not to buy this one just go ahead and get it. You will enjoy this machine a lot. As I use more of the feet that came with the machine I will update my review. Hope this helps.

4Amazing accessory package is no lie--and many features, too
By Joanna Daneman
This is the same machine as the Singer H74. Considering what comes with this machine, it is a very good value as a "budget-wise" machine. Though lacking some of the inventive features of higher end machines, this machine has enough functionality that even if its straight stitch is not as smooth as that of an expensive model, so much is included that it is a very tempting value.Singer has been combined with Pfaff and Viking and these are (like Vikings and Pfaff) now all made in Asia. The Singers are the lower end of the line, but are designed to compete with the the widely available and inexpensive Brothers. They've been repackaged with extra feet and features to sweeten the deal. And it's pretty sweet for a budget machine.Pros:They list this as "amazing accessory package" and that is no lie. You get:An extension table. This lets you sew larger objects (quilts, for example) without slopping over a free arm. Many times, these cost almost a hundred smackers and really, if you sew decor or home items or shirts and skirts, they are a real boon.A zipper case to keep off the dust and keep cord, foot pedal and instruction book all together. Most machines today do not come with a case--you get a thin little dust cover. This is a nice extra.A huge assortment of presser feet: Sew and Serge Foot, Twin Needle, Rolled Hem Foot, Straight Stitch Foot, Gathering Foot, Open-Toe Foot, 1/4" Piecing Foot, Cording Foot, Darning/Embroidery Foot, Non-Stick Foot, Walking Even Feed Foot, Roller Foot, Edge Joining Foot and Invisible Zipper Foot. That's a lot of presser feet and if you price them out individually, they come to more than half the cost of the machine (ask me how I know... my Janome came with only the most minimal selection of feet. ) The walking foot is particularly useful for quilting--this holds the fabric evenly top and bottom so you can sew without having the layers shift. The machine has the needle-up-down memory. I find this absolutely imperative for most sewing. The needle can be programmed to stop in the down position which lets you pivot on a corner or angle, especially useful for appliquéing and quilting. I use this feature all the time on my machines. There are a lot of decorative stitches, including block and script alphabets, and there is a stitch chart to prop up on the top of the machine. It has a thread cutter. The one-step buttonhole has many selections of buttonhole shapes, keyhole, etc. There is an eyelet, also.It has a speed-regulating lever. This is another thing I love on sewing machines and use a lot. When you are doing delicate work, you can slow the machine down so it's maximum speed is much slower. This gives you a lot of control over your sewing.Cons:These machines always feel a bit "gritty" to me (not smooth, a bit noisy, hard to describe the feeling.)The bobbin feels a bit loosey-gooseyThere have been reports of problems with the cutter and the bobbin malfunctioning and needed repair under warranty (authorized dealers are widely available since JoAnns has started selling the Singer line.) Check if you have an authorized dealer near you.The LCD/ computer on board is great, but if it fails, it's an expensive repair and the machine is dead in the water until you get it up and running. Mechanical machines (those that use dials to change stitches and have no LCD) are more rugged in this regard. Also, if you are in an area with frequent thunderstorms, unplug this between uses--as a power surge can burn out the computer board. This will save you grief. It's a two second deal to pull the plug out after every use and I'd do that as a habit. It weighs 20 lbs or so, a bit heavier than some of the machines that people like to carry to classes. If you are attending classes or traveling with the machine, you'd want a rolling tote to carry it. The case would not be suitable for carrying around, in my opinion. These types of machines typically will not sew through six layers of heavy fabric. The plastic and nylon gearing is too light for that task.Bottom Line:This machine has a ton of features for a favorable price. It's a budget machine, designed to compete with the Brothers and it has a lot for the money. By "budget" I don't mean the cheapest machine on the block. You can get a functional sewing machine with zigzag and more for under a hundred simoleons. But for fully functional and suited to a wide range of tasks, this has more than many "starter" machines at one and a half times as much. If you are on a budget, this has enough capability to do quilting, sewing, decorative stitching and it's fun. It would suit a youngster as long as they were mature enough not to push a machine when it clogs or jams. It is not top-quality, but it is not designed to be. If you do not sew 24/7 and are a hobbyist, or have a young sewist who wants a lot of capability on a limited budget, this is a great choice. I am not sure of the quality long-term, so if I were planning to do a great deal of heavy sewing, I'd probably sacrifice a lot of the extras for a more rugged or a higher-end machine.

1Poor Quality for the Money
By Dennis Trammell
My husband purchased this machine for me for Mother's Day. The machine sews okay but the quality is poor. I would expect higher quality for the money spent. In addition it is not a Serge Machine. Yes it does an overcast stitch but I wouldn't call it a Serger. The first time I changed the needle, the needle clamp screw broke. Without a screw, well I'm screwed! The machine is not usable. I've contacted Singer and their customer service is horrible. It takes a long time to get someone on the phone. Literally I called serveral times and eventually gave up the wait. When I finally waited it out I was on hold 50 minutes before reaching a live person. I was told the part would be mailed to me. After never receiving it, I again called back. After another very long wait was the told the part was on back order and it would be months before I receive it. Really? They can't mail me a screw? I guess if I want to use the machine I have to go out and find one myself and buy it. I expected better quality from a Singer machine. And better customer service from a company that's been around so long. Should have stuck with Brother.
