5Singer confidence quilter
By Carol Baum
I have had this machine for a year. Most of the sewing I have done on this machine is quilt piecing, general sewing, and some quilting. One feature that no one has mentioned (as far as I recall) is a special feature that in piecing quilts has saved me much time in piecing. As you begin your seam the machine sews a few stitches and backs up over them, securing the beginning of the seam. When you finish the seam, hit the reverse arrow and it secures the last stitches of the seam in the same way.The stitches are consistently straight. It also comes with an attachable walking foot. The throat plate of the machine is clear making it visible to see if you are running out of thread. There are better sewing machines of this type but the price ranges begin somewhere at $1,000. With all the "bells and whistles" this machine has, I would highly recommend it.

3Good for beginners
By havalina
I have quilted for years on an old 90's Singer and decided to finally move into the 21st Century. Of course the reason I never upgraded was cause I was broke so I thought I would try out the Singer 7469Q - I got it at Jo-Ann's which has a 10 day return!I used this machine to quilt a queen sized wedding chain quilt. I plan on returning it. I have been wanting to upgrade from my early 90's Singer and wanted to check out this one. It feels cheap - for ex. the thread holder is thin flimsy plastic. The LED light is incredibly dim - you need a desk lamp. Also, the stiches don't get very long -- my old Singer you could get long basting stitches which is nice. It's fussy about the thread - you have to have it threaded just right or it goes nuts - I never had this problem before either. It does pretty well with free motion quilting -- a little jerky but after an hour or so I had gotten used to it and could do some attractive stitching.Over all, I think this is a GREAT machine for a beginners - it has all the extras so you can experiment with what feet you like to use, etc. and learn about it. BUT the feet are flimsy. It's not a work horse like my old machine.I would say, if you make more than 2 quilts a year, upgrade. If you just want to make a few baby quilts, this is a great economical option for you, it would probably last great under light use -- I use mine so much I"m worried about breaking it and am going to suck it up and pay a bunch of money for a nicer machine.

3A satisfactory machine for the money!
By Judy K. Polhemus
Note: My rating is 3.5 stars.Oh, how I wanted a new sewing machine! My old one (to remain nameless) gave me fits with its unreliability and need to be repaired time after time. At Christmas, with a Christmas bonus in hand and a great sale at my local fabric and craft store, I bought the Singer Confidence Quilter Machine with its characteristic gold front. It was a great deal for the money. However, I packed it up after two days and returned it. The instruction book does not have a section for the machine's quilting aspects. Imagine promoting a machine as a Quilter and nothing of explanation! For that, I deduct one star. Unfortunately (yet fortunately), the store would not take the machine until my check cleared the bank.In frustration, I took it home, unpacked it, and decided I would learn to use it despite a lack of instructions. I did find something on u-Tube, but really, shouldn't a company have a special section or even manual of explanation for a machine named as a Quilter?OK, I'm repeating myself in order to make a point. Although this lack is a serious flaw concerning the machine, there is yet one more negative: You have to reset the stitch regulator every time you turn on the machine. The stitch length is set at 2.5. I don't want such tight stitches, so I reset to about 4 each time. So, like driving, once you get into a habit, you really don't think about it. You just do it!Now for the positives:1. The price I paid was incredible. This is regularly a $499 machine for which I paid less than $300. That's a fantastic price (sale plus teacher discount card at my fabric store). For the money I have a reliable machine.2. My favorite thing (which is not standard on all machines) is the "needle up-down" feature. When I make totes, I NEED that down position to keep the needle in place for curves and turns.3. It is so easy to thread, easiest of all machines I've used over the years!4. It has a needle threader. I cannot always make it work, but that's probably my fault. In fact, after I changed this last needle, I can't get it to take the thread. Hmmm, the needle?5. The drop-in bobbin is so easy to thread into position! Really easy! Plus the plastic window allows preparation for an emptying bobbin.6. The bobbin winder is twice as easy as my last machine.7. I like the quality of stitches because they are even on top and bottom. They are not beautiful as the ones made by my mother's expensive machine, but they are totally satisfactory. For the price, I'm happy.8. The extension table holds that bulky quilt to help prevent drag. I love the table (although there is a bit of vibration).9. The removable part around the needle plate to allow sewing of tight things like sleeves or small garments. Brilliant!10. The tons of stitch types--so fun to use and experiment with!11. The bed is longer than the average machine, allowing a rolled quilt to go through the opening. Aha, Quilter's Machine!12. The machine comes with a packet of three quilting feet (again no explanation of how they're used or what they're for, but u-Tube showed me).I must mention one other negative: the little LED light is too weak and not placed in the right place. But I added a lamp to my sewing area and I'm fine with it. In fact, I don't even think about it any more. That driving analogy again!Overall, for the money and all the wonderful features, the Singer Confidence Quilter Machine is an excellent buy. Although I cannot have those top of the line machines, I'm quite pleased with this one.Addendum: This is written on March 15, 2013 after two years of Singer ownership. Recently, I had the opportunity to sew on a $1700 machine, a competitor. I was thinking of replacing my Singer. After three hours, I came to the conclusion that I could not tell the difference between the two machines. Now that's saying a lot!

4Lots of stitches, features for a small price
By Joanna Daneman
I was VERY surprised that a sewing machine could be budget-priced, yet have the features and stitch repertoire of a much more expensive machine. I have to say, if you are looking for a do-all machine and don't have megabucks to spend, this could be a very excellent choice.Features:Electronic controlsSeventy stitchesSix one-step buttonholes (automatic foot fits buttonhole to button.)Top loading bobbin (I prefer this, easier for me to see)Push button stitch choice (rather than knob)Stretch stitches, ornamental stitches, utility stitchesAutomatic pressure adjuster on pressure foot (for thin to thick fabrics)Extra high foot lift (handy for quilting or doing thick layers of denin hemming, for example.)Most of the time, if you want to buy a beginner-level sewing machine, you will not get automatic buttonholes nor electronic stitch choice. There are a LOT of stitches here, including quite a few ornamental embroidery-types stitches that are handy for children's clothing, bedding, housewares and quilting. This machine can handle twin needles (great for hemming and top stitching.) My only complaint is that it only comes with a minimal number of accessory feet, so you might have to spend extra to get a specialty foot you wish to have (such as a walking foot for quilting.)

5Loved it from the first try!
By Sarah S.
Before buying this machine I used an older model of Brother Brand. When the Brother broke down I still wanted something reasonably basic but with a few more capabilities than the Brother had been able to do. I was in no way disappointed in the way this machine stitches and runs. The DVD that comes with it is very well done and gave lot's of good information and ideas. The only things about this machine that might take some getting used to is that the power cord and foot control are seperate whereas on my Brother machine they were all connected in one cord and the foot control is less sensitive than the Brother had ben and has some delays if I take my foot off it and then try to make it go again immediately. Those are not bad things but just something that I will have to get used to. Overall it is a very easy machine to use and it truly stitches beautifully and much better than my older machine.

5Great machine, especially for the price!
By Bocaboy
This Singer was for my wife, to replace her ages-old machine. I don't know anything about using sewing machines, but I can tell you that since she got this she's been sewing up a storm! I asked her after she'd had it for a few days whether it sewed buttons on, since that's the one chore I always delegate to her. (OK, shoot me, I don't know how to do it!!) She told me no, then a few minutes later came running into the room to say that, yes, this machine even sewed buttons, not just button holes!Anyway, I'm a happy camper because she's a happy camper. I wouldn't label my wife an expert seamstress, but she does make her own dresses, and often finds something at Marshall's or TJMaxx that needs an alteration to make it work, and she's great at doing that with this machine. The price was also hundreds of dollars less than others that we evaluated, and this item shipped with Amazon Prime.I can tell you that now that she's had it for a month, she'd purchase it again. Oh, and lessons for this machine and how to use it are all over YouTube, so there are lots of tutorials to get you over most usage questions.

4Nice beginner machine
By MomofTwins
I originally bought the Singer Curvy and had all sorts of issues with it... I returned it and purchased the Singer ONE and it is working out nicely for me. Is it a deluxe machine? No. It's a nice beginner machine for $250 and it works nicely. The stitches usually come out nicely. I say usually because at times the stitches do seem to stack themselves as the track doesn't always move the fabric through. When you go over sewn seams just go slower or this is the area that the stitches can occasionally double up.You DO NEED to ALLOW about 5 inches of thread tail before you start stitching. If you only have like 3 inches loose to start a stitch the needle pulls it completely through and you have to put the tread through the needle again. That is a pain and I just have to remember to leave that nice long tail.I've not had a single needle break or come loose like I did with the Singer Curvy. I DO recommend that you purchase the inspira needles vs the Singer brand needles that are sold at Joannes. The Singer needles broke often and the inspira that are sold FOR Singer machines work great. They are about double the price but they are worth it! I've used the same needle for almost 5 weeks and I've worked on quilts, purses and dog clothing. It is easy enough to move from my sewing room to my dining room without having it too big and heavy to hassle with. That is important to me. Over all I'd give it 4 stars. I do wish it had more stitches and was quieter and could get through thicker fabric easier. But what do I expect for $250. The stitches that it does have are fun and will work nicely for me until I'm ready to spend $1000 on a fancier machine. The removable extended arm is USEFUL! Wow -- it's so nice to have the extra space for quilting and then be able to remove it to fix my children's clothing or work on a delicate seam.Ultimately it's a good machine that I'm having a lot of fun with. I would recommend this machine if you aren't working on super thick quilts. My quilts are usually 1/2 inch thick and so far that works out okay for this machine.Have fun!

5If you're "on the fence," read this!
By Kathryn Marcotte
My affair with sewing started back in my youth, but like most affairs, ran hot-and-cold. Mostly cold. I cut my sewing teeth on my mom's old Montgomery Ward from the early '70s, and stopped sewing as soon as I left her house. Fast forward to the adoption of the first machine I'd owned, a late 1940s National Brand machine I got on trade.Using creaky, temperamental machines with that warm oil smell, ear piercing screech, and a dozen or so stitches accessed by rotary wheel is all I know. Or, at least, used to know. I purchased the Singer ONE 2-3 months ago, after much internal debate and reading hundreds of reviews on different models.I had no idea sewing was supposed to be so easy, so fun, and so rewarding. This machine is ready-to-use, right out of the box. It is not the most advanced computerized machine, so it the bill to be my first. There are some nonessential "perks" it offers (storage, a variety of feet, flexibility with accommodating various spool sizes, idiot-proof bobbin winding) that pleasantly surprised me.I am not a master seamstress. I'm struggling to type this review because I don't know enough "sewing vocab" to avoid looking foolish. But this machine makes my work look like I'm far better than I am, and most importantly, it is so user-friendly for beginners than I FEEL good about sewing. Which leads me to use it more. Which makes me better. It's a beautifully vicious cycle. There are some obvious things that should be noted, that will help you avoid many common problems--and many of these apply to ANY computerized machine:1. It is a computer, first and foremost. It's not going to run like Mom's old Montgomery Ward, because that was a machine. This is a computer with machine parts attached. It's a different beast. Comparing the two types is like comparing your granddad's work truck to your neighbor's Prius.2. It's not "flimsy" or "cheap," but it's not going to send vibrations through your table or give you hernia when you move it. It is mostly plastic, with a metal internal frame for stability. It is light, it is stable, and feels nothing like it's elders (or most expensive models). These points ended up in my favor, as those older, heftier, or more expensive types were too intimidating for someone wanting to love sewing, not develop career skills.3. It is a computer. Computers are sensitive to being dropped, getting wet, being exposed to (or building up) heat, and to power surges. Logic must prevail; I want to ask if the people who experienced power failure with this machine had it plugged in to a surge protector. If not, that's a more likely culprit than it not being a quality machine.4. I have made a few mistakes resulting in mystery error codes on the LED screen--the manual is only marginally helpful. The Internet, however, is a gold mine. Each and every error has been my part (not lowering the foot, trying to sew something that is too thick, not properly doing something... On my "old" machine, I wouldn't have gotten a mysterious screeching beep and flashing red light, and could have kept sewing until I realized my error. This one "locks up" as people say because the computer is designed to not let you tear the machine (or your project) up. If you don't like being corrected when you're wrong, this isn't the machine for you.5. I did not test drive a bunch of machines before purchasing. I did look at a few hundred pictures and agonized over reviews from professionals and amatures/hobbyists. And among the people "like me," this was the best machine for me. The decorative stitches are beautiful and plentiful, but not abundantly overwhelming. It is easy for me to adjust the length of stitches. The computer tells me when the stitch I have selected needs a different foot. The bottom line is with this computerized model, I CAN SEW what I want to sew, and learn. I did not have to learn everything first in order to use it. As for its durability, it has helped me make well over 30 thick, plump, thirsty cloth diapers and a handful of crib sheets. It also allowed me to recover a glider chair with some beautiful heavy upholstery fabric I was previously afraid to cut for fear of "screwing it up." Any machine that can give me confidence and perform consistently and reliably is a 5 star item for me.

5Singer One
By Susie Walker
I love my new sewing machine. It came out of the box easy. I plugged it up and read the paperwork. The bobbin threaded so easy and I love the way the bobbin just popped in. Threaded so easy. I can see many years of sewing with this machine. The sound was so quite compared to my last machine. Again I love it.

4Love this machine. Great value. Not fancy.
By S. Eaton
I have a Pfaff quilters machine that died and needs parts. It is going to cost about double the cost of this machine to repair it. So I figured what the heck. I've been sewing since grade school in the 1960s and have used all sorts of machines. I also worked at a fabric store for a number of years. I have some advice for the beginner. Various reviews of this machine complain about some problems I thought I'd speak to here. This is a nice little machine. Initially even I had trouble with it. Discovered that the threading instruction picture in the instruction book is a bit tricky. Don't forget to thread the little bracket that is above the needle. It is step 7 in the book, but not obvious in the picture and not obvious on the machine. The thread first goes through the fairly obvious metal holder in step six, then it needs to go in that little tiny bracket, a small piece of metal that is laying on top of the needle mount. If you don't thread that, the thread will ball up underneath and mess up your sewing and lock up. I suggest stopping at a Joann Fabrics where they sell this machine and ask someone to show you if you can't find it. that's what I ended up doing. Also for the beginner, Singer machines in particular can also tangle the thread if you don't gently hold the ends at the beginning of a seam. Sometimes, it will pull the thread down into the bobbin area and lock up. This is solved simply by holding the ends for the first couple of stitches. Eventually, after you've had to rip out a few balled up seams, you remember.I made a heavy vinyl pouch with it as my first project, and it handled the vinyl really well. The feeddogs struggled a bit with the weight of the fabric, pulling it out of line, so I had to put the weight of the fabric on a chair so it didn't pull. Another tip for the beginner, always stop the machine with the needle in the fabric. You do this by stopping and quickly turning the wheel to get that needle back in the fabric.Another tip here to any new sewer. First take the original needle out of that machine and throw it away. You have no idea what kind of shape it is in. Open the packet of needles that are in the little door in the free arm and use a fresh needle. Sharp needles are critical to any project. And they only stay sharp for a few projects at most. When you are working with heavy fabric like vinyl or denim, you need to use a heavy duty needle, especially if you are going through four layers of denim. Check them out at the fabric store. Get the type of needle that matches your type of fabric. If you are not sure, ask. And sew through the thick parts very slowly, sometimes you may need to manually insert the needle and pull it up to get through a lot of layers properly to get the machine going. Take your time.Knits need different needles, sometimes, a ballpoint needle that passes between fibers instead of splitting them as you sew. Fine fabrics also need different needles and they must be very sharp.Whenever the stitching balls up under your piece, it is likely because the top or bobbin is threaded wrong. Make sure the thread is coming off the bobbin with the loose thread pointing to the left. It can be a bad needle. It can be a tension problem or a bad match between needle and fabric. If the stitches seem really tight, the tension can be turned a half number either way and solve the problem, but only after you have ruled out the other problems. IT happens to the best of us so don't get discouraged. Imagine me going into my old store to have them show me how to thread a machine. : )Beyond all that, I liked sewing with this machine. it is relatively quiet, and does sew fast. This will be great for doing piecing for quilts. It isn't the quality of my Pfaff, which is all metal (the skin of this machine is plastic) and doesn't have a lot of fancy stitches, but it is a great value for what it does do and does execute well for all I've done so far. And perfect for a beginner sewer, or someone who only needs a machine once in awhile to hem pants or take care of odd little projects or someone like me who was going through withdrawal when her machine dies and is going to take some time to get fixed.

3Singer 4411
By Michael
I am a self employed seamstress and I am very hard on machines, especially with hemming blue jeans and zippers in carhart coats and many other things. One thing I was looking for was an affordable product that was heavy duty. Singer is always a great brand and I watched videos on what this product can do, so I ordered it. Much to my dismay, I found that it wasn't any different than any other machine. Heavy Duty on this machine means nothing. It does do some of the things that they say but it does not go through all the layers of material that it says. Overall it is a fine machine, but it is not Heavy duty.

5My third Singer
By Maryska Connolly-brown
I bought this little guy as a back up for my Singer Quantum 7350. I'm sew a lot of unusual fabrics and am more than a little hard on sewing machines. My daily sewing projects include costuming (vinyl, fur, etc); household uses (curtains, bedding); and formal wear. It never fails that when I'm approaching a deadline on a big project my sewing machine decides it needs to pay a visit to my friendly neighborhood sewing repair shop for a tuneup. It's about 10 years old now and if you saw what I put it through, you'd understand why. I've also dropped it twice.I will admit, I don't actually expect this Singer to be a 'heavy-duty' machine. Not my definition of heavy-duty anyway. Not for this price. What I do expect is something that will be reliable, no frills, and hold up to my abuse. I think that's what I've got. It has only been three days and I have already made a monk's robe and caught up on my minor repair work. The needle had to be changed immediately. I don't know why, but sewing machines always seem to come with sub par, blunt needles. Once I had, it was humming along smoothly in minutes. It threads just like the other two Singers I've owned and sews a nice straight, tight stitch. It's also not as loud as some of the other reviews have said, but that may be just because I've always tended to go for the more basic, utilitarian models rather than fancy electronics and 100 stitch patterns that I'll never use and am used to a little noise when I sew.All in all, I'm very pleased so far. I'll update this review if that changes! Happy sewing ladies and gents.UPDATE (August 29th 2011): I might have to eat my words about this not really being 'heavy duty.' I sewed quite a bit of light to medium weight leather this past weekend and it didn't so much as hiccup. Bravo Singer!(Be sure to use the right type of needles if you plan on doing this. Universal needles will not perform well with leather no matter how tough the machine. :))

5AMAZING PRODUCT!
By Gianna
I owned this machine for several months by now, and its amazing. As with any technological product (no matter if its a cellular or a sewing Machine) there's a learning curve for it. Do research, read manuals, ask around.I did a ton of research before buying this particular model. It could sew and embroider. most of the machines just came with either 4x4 hoops or 4 x 4 and 5 x 7 hoops. the large hoop for large projects are a plus. and last but not least, the price range of it, compare to other brands that do the same was the selling point hundred of dollars less than the others. WOW.Machine Related:- The sewing/embroidering part is big, yes BIG, making quilting or sewing big projects easier. But if you did a little research on this particular machine, you already knew it was big and that you will need ample space for it. When in sewing mode, its not bigger than any regular sewing machine, but with the embroidery arm attached this thing is huge, as to accommodate the big hoop that came with it.Mine is sitting on a desk by itself and my regular sewing machine and serger are in another desk.- Its very bright, which means that working on it is less of a task, more of a joy.Sewing part:- Include most of the presser feet you might need to start any project right away. - A beautiful selections of stitches lost of stitches to task and embellish your fabric. its true, there are not hundreds of them, but there are plenty.- making button hole is easier.- Threading system helps those of us that struggle with needle eye :-)Embroidery part:-Right out of the box, it comes with a software that allows you to do a ton of embroidery designs included. the hoops, 4 x 4 and 6 x 10 were the most easy to install that I have tested. just snap on place and ready!- there's a certain order to do things to avoid mistakes that are "user error", not machine related. and that's why there's a manual for it. manuals are your friends, READ THEM!-it includes designs both small and big to be used right away and you can download more via internet- it read all design formats: PES, HUS, DST, VP3, FHE, etc, although XXX is Singer native.- Speed control, back up and forward stitch buttons, to customize your user time, as fast/sow as you want, back up to restitch or forward to skip ahead.I do have cons, but all of the fixable.- the spool stand that comes on the machine, its a common complain. i don't know what it is, but thread tends to tangle on the path, making for the breaking threads and needles. a thread stand behind the machine solve it. Or, as i heard from many users, putting the spool in a cup behind the machine works wonders.:-)- it says to sew with the tension on "s" and embroider with it on "E". you will soon learn that you need to adapt this as tension relate to fabric and thickness of it. I embroider with it a little on top of the "E" and a little below the "S" for sewing.- The software that comes with it is as simple as it gets. you can create sayings and re-size designs, change colors, and that's it. But again, i knew this. I knew that Singer sell additional software for it. ALL machines come with this type of software unless you buy them with a bundle. You want to do more? prepare to pay more.Final thought: embroidery doesn't come cheap. Not even closed. Whether you want to create a small business or be creative around the house (my case) you are going to be buying LOTS and LOTS of stuffs: the special thread (I get mine here, poly Threadart brand, and Metro from their site.), stabilizers (all kinds: cut-away, tear-away, water soluble), needles, more designs, and if you want to be creative, additional software that will allow you to create or modify designs (I use Wilcom and Embird).Need help? there is plenty of it on the web, including great support pages, forums and groups (I belong to 2 amazing ones on Facebook)I love my XL-400 and will recommend it 100% to my friends or anybody willing to hear me. Sorry if other haven't had a great experience with I will advise to have patience and READ THE MANUAL! :-)P.S. November 5th, 2012: I added a few pictures of projects I have completed with my XL-400. I have found out that some designs might look pretty but doesn't embroider as well as others. same thing for the type of thread, bobbin thread and stabilizers yo choose.P.S. 2 January 11th, 2013: since people keep asking me and repeating their cons, I thought I add some points:- You need a PC/laptop in order for this machine to embroider (not to sew)but you can use the software without the machine, after you turn it on and open the software, just turn the machine off and use the software.- The included software is not an elegance program but instead of a tiny LCD screen you get a big one (as big as your laptop/PC screen) that let you work on your design right there.- I have several machines and a serger (brother, viking and singer) and all of them have a small space for feet change, not just the embroidery machines, but the sewing also. and the XL-400 is the taller of them all (well, except for the quattro, but that a league of its own)- It doesn't have speed bobbin control. I have never seen a machine with speed bobbin control. guess never need it, since all machine ideally come set to wind bobbin as tight as required.- about the thread breaking, I did mention that (happens to me in my brothers also) and mentioned also the cup technique and the ease of a thread stand. I use it as 3/4 of the speed, never less, never more, never a problem. try a diff brand of thread. What work for me, might not work for you and vice-versa.-The noise emitting from the machine, this I can not say anything since mine its not quiet but I don't find it THAT loud either ( inserting the bobbin upside down, since 15J bobbins have one side curve and the other straight, increase the sounds AND the breakage, but since it is user error, is fixable ;-)- "DOES NOT INCLUDE AUTOMATIC THREAD CUTTER" no, really, it doesn't, it never said it did. get a tiny embroidery scissor, a curve scissor or a duck scissor. or all three! you can never have too many scissors.- the hoops are flat and plastic. take care of them.me? still in love with my machine...P.S. 3 February 13, 2013: Apparently Amazon had a bad batch of these machines. They even put up a message that they were reviewing/revising the machines they had in stock.Sorry for those that got one lemon machine.I still hold unto my review of MY machine as an excellent one, worth getting it.

5Wonderful machine
By jayelee
Bought this machine despite all of the people who complained about it I love it it does many things my Viking machines did not do and it embroiders as well if not better than both of them. I spent thousands of dollars on both of them and less than eight hundred on this one and I believe I got the better deal on The XL 400. It works just as well has a bigger area for quilting , embroiders a bigger area, has needle up and down, sews by itself with out the foot pedal is extremely easy to use, I can use any format and do not need to use the Singer software can use most of the software out there With my Vikings I needed to buy their software and couldnt run the machine without it And there is much more good about this machine that I can't go into here If you have the opportunity to buy this machine do so Oh by the way I am a real person who quilts everyday and on the weekend I quilt all day long for two or three days and I use the embroidery function to quilt the quilts with many designs.

2Too many issues.
By TraciMarshall
I purchased this machine for the larger embroidery field, having outgrown the four by four stitch field on my Brother SE-400. I really wanted to love this machine. Unfortunately, there were issues from the beginning. The thread never did feed correctly off the spool holder. It constantly gave me broken thread warnings when thread was not broken. The ten by six hoop could not hold the fabric firmly and could not be adjusted further. Several times the beginning thread was not even sewn into fabric. The stitch was not as pretty or neat as the stitch on my brother. I did the same small project on my brother as on the Singer in a stitch by stitch comparison, the Brother stitched the entire project without any problem, after one false start with the thread not sewing, three broken thread warnings, and some not so neat stitches on the Singer, I knew I wouldn't be keeping this machine. I will be returning this and ordering the Brother PE-770. I didn't mind the fact that the computer had to be connected to the sewing machine for it to run the software but did think the software was a little difficult and would take some time to learn.Update on return: Sent request for return on Wednesday afternoon, Machine was picked up Thursday evening and my credit card account was credited by Monday morning. Once again, wonderful customer service from Amazon.

5One of the Easiest Basic Sergers to Thread
By So.Cal. Sewist -- Delia
I bought mine elsewhere and have had it long enough to say I wish I had bought it here at Amazon. The price here is very good, and if you buy it with Prime, no shipping charge. A nice little serger, not too large, not too heavy, but heavy enough not to rock off the table at a fast speed. This is a manual machine, not automatic. It comes with three additional presser feet, elastic, gathering, blind hem. The presser foot has an extra high lift so you can get thicker fabrics under the foot. The threading is color coded and easy to follow as the whole front opens up for easy access, just follow the correct order of threading! (Correct order is in a paragraph below) You can get by with two cones of thread for the loopers and two spools for the needles if cost is an issue.10/3/2013 UPDATE -- there is a short YouTube video of this model with the Viking name on it -- same machine titled: Husqvarna Viking HClass 200S Serger - that shows threading and removing the stitch finger for rolled hem. The Lady doing the demo is quick so you need your manual if you are not sure where the stitch finger is or what it is.The accessory tools are attached on the inside of the front cover which makes it very handy to keep them at the machine and in front of you.Raise the thread pole (antenna) up as high as it will go for the correct tension of the threads.(5/23/2013 New to serging, this workbook may help you. See WORKBOOK info at bottom of review.)The Singer 14J250 Stylist II is a 2, 3, 4 thread serger, which means it can use two threads up to 4 threads for most basic serger needs. It will Not do the coverhem stitch which is the stitch you see on T-shirt hems that has the double or triple row of stitching. This machine does have differential feed which helps when the fabric tries to curl and you want to ease it flat, or when you want it to have a wavy edge.It has a thread-chain cutter built in behind the stitching plate so no scissors needed to cut the thread chain to release the fabric from the machine (Love that Feature!!), an adjustable Fabric Guide -- not seen on most other sergers. BTW, the main tools store in the front. Its open threading makes it one of the easiest threading sergers on the market. The cutting knife can be turned off if you don't need to use the cutting feature. The whole front opens up so you can easily get at the loopers for threading, just be sure to thread it in the correct order so the threads lay in there to function properly -- The Singer manual states first Upper Looper, second lower Looper, then your needles, right then left. Follow the manual's instructions for 3 thread and 2 thread.9/13/2013 Addendum to threading in manual: I called Singer today and found out that the threading order in the book was reversed. The correct threading is as I wrote above, first the Upper Looper, second the Lower looper, third, right needle and then left needle. This is the correct order for all threading except where you are leaving out one of the needles for a three thread or for a two thread. You'd usually use 2 thread to make the tiny rolled hem on hankerchiefs and dinner napkins or the bottom edge of a tuck-in blouse. Three thread is the most normally used stitch for overcasting and finishing seams or fabric edges. I also use it when I have ravelling fabric and have to wash it, I first serge the edges and then toss it in the wash on delicate. The 4 thread you'd use on stress places like arm hole or the back seam on pants, because it is the three thread with the safety straight stitch along side. This machine does not have automatic tension adjustment, you get to adjust it in small increments when needed. I'd highly recommend First writing down the tension settings as they are when you get the machine Before you change anything. That way you have a baseline in case stitching is way off and you need to start over to fix the tension. There is no need to pull the fabric from the back. That causes needle(s) to bend and then break. Just let it feed, guiding only. Keep your fingers to the side. This machine feeds well from the front, just get it to the front edge of the foot and it will take it in, or just lift the foot a bit to put fabric under if you feel the need. If you don't use the adjustable edge guide and find that your serged stitch is wavering, anchor your right hand steady on the front of the machine guiding the fabric through your fingers, or rest your hand on the table edge.If you need assistance serging with this machine, do an internet search for White Model Sergers group at yahoo as this model is like the White 2900 or the Viking 200S. There is a way to do a mock coverhem stitch using the serger and your sewing machine with a double needle. Ask that group how to do it. While HSN still has the Stylist II serger in stock there is a video under the picture you can watch.I'd recommend getting a basic serger book with easy projects to help you get started. Singer had a good one and I know there are others. Make a cover for it and your sewing machine. Have fun.4/26/2013 -- For anyone just starting out, use a good quality serger thread. Best not to use the cheap stuff as it generally has a tendency to cause more lint to clean out more often -- short fuzzy thread fibers. Serger thread is thinner than regular sewing thread due to the machine runing at high speed. The loopers use the most thread. One can get by with two cones of serger thread for the loopers and two spools of matching color thread for the needles. One well known sewing TV personality says basic choices are neutral colors, like grey or charcoal for dark fabric and beige tone for lighter colored fabric. If you wish to get to know which thread does what part of the stitch chain, use colored thread similar to what is marked on the machine. Run some stitching and see which looper thread is on top and which is at the back, and right and left needle threads so you can adjust if one is off kilter. Save your sample for future comparison with the settings marked on the fabric.I tape a small bag to the edge of the table to catch the cut off waste. If preferred, thread catchers can be bought or made from patterns; some patterns are free on line.5/23/2013 -- WORKBOOK -- For those who like additional information there is a free downloadable workbook for this model of serger by the original White company, which is now a part of VSP International company (Viking Singer Pfaff). Go to Singerco.com and under support / manuals you can put in the following model number -- Put in 2000 and scroll down to the bottom manual titled "WSL2000 ATS (Part 1)" and "WSL2000 ATS (Part 2)." That is the free downloadable workbook that will work with this serger. I did a quick check and the differences would be the needles -- Singer says use Singer needles -- and the reference to a waste tray which is not part of the Singer 14J250 Stylist II. If this workbook helps you, leave a comment about it here. Thanks.

5Singer Stylist II is a gem.
By cindy
Just received my new serger and set it up this morning. Upon opening the box I discovered the serger came threaded and to my delight I discovered that this serger not only uses the big spools but you can use the small spools of thread as well. (I almost purchased the Brother serger for this reason. Glad I didn't) They don't tell you about the different size thread spools you can use in any of the reviews or product details. As a matter of fact, they don't give you much information in the details at all. This is a wonderful serger. Not only does it come with all the necessary tools, but it also comes with 3 additional feet. An elastic tape foot, a blind hem foot and gathering/shirring foot. Each foot comes in it's own little box which also contains directions on how to use each one. The manual that comes with this serger is pretty straight forward and easy to read. As I said the serger came threaded but I guess during shipping the threads were loose so they got a little tangled up. While trying it out I broke a thread. After following the directions and double checking all the treading I got the machine up and running. It was a little frustrating because I had no idea what I was doing, but after trial and error I got it working. Keep in mind, I am a beginner sewer and know barely anything about sewing machines or sergers. This machine is very user friendly for beginners and I highly recommend it.

5ultra excellent
By bill
Well my new toy just arrived!! This machine is well above awesome this thing is ultra epic & it's a little monster!! I just tested it with light weight 40 denier tricot nylon, the material just glided through the machine as if it were on air. The machine feels extremely rigid, sturdy and stable & It stays in one place when high speed stitching. As far as threading goes it was very easy & this is my FIRST serger if i can thread it, believe me ANY one can thread it. Now i have a good singer collection. This new serger and a quantum stylist 9960...AWESOME!! Can't wait for my girl to get home so she can use it for her stuff..she loves sewing and will find this little monster epic.
